Why Stumps Need to Go
Most homeowners underestimate how much trouble a leftover stump can cause. Here’s what you’re dealing with every day it stays in the ground.
🚨 Tripping & liability hazard
Stumps — especially low, partially hidden ones — are a real injury risk for kids, guests, and anyone mowing around them. In the wrong scenario, that’s a homeowner liability issue.
🐜 Termites & wood-boring pests
Decaying stumps are prime real estate for termites, carpenter ants, and wood-boring beetles. Once established near your home, these pests don’t always stay in the stump.
🌱 Persistent regrowth shoots
Many tree species — especially silver maple and black locust, both common in St. Charles County — send up new shoots for years around an unground stump, creating constant maintenance work.
🌿 Lawn & landscaping interference
Stumps make mowing frustrating and block the areas where you’d want to plant, lay sod, build a patio, or add new landscaping. Removing them opens up the space properly.
Stump Grinding vs. Full Removal
Homeowners often ask whether they need grinding or full removal. Here’s the honest comparison.

Frequently Asked Questions
We grind all stumps to a minimum of 6 inches below grade as standard. If you’re planning to lay new sod, plant a tree in the same spot, or pour a concrete surface over the area, we can grind deeper — typically 10–12 inches — just let us know your plans when we do the estimate and we’ll grind accordingly at no extra charge.
You have two options. By default we rake the wood chip grindings back into the hole as natural fill — they’ll decompose over 1–2 years and the area will settle flush with your lawn. If you’d prefer a completely clean finish, we can haul the grindings away for a small additional fee ($50–$75). Some homeowners also like to keep them for garden mulch — just say the word and we’ll pile them wherever is convenient.
For most tree species, yes — grinding below grade removes enough of the root crown to stop regrowth. The exception is some particularly persistent species like silver maple, black locust, and tree-of-heaven, which may send up a few shoots from remaining lateral roots in the first season. If this happens, those shoots can be cut or treated with a stump killer. For these species we recommend grinding at least 8–10 inches deep to minimize the chance.
Yes — we have compact stump grinders designed specifically for tight spaces, narrow gate openings, and confined backyard areas. As long as we can get a machine that’s roughly 36″ wide through your gate, we can handle the job. If your gate is narrower than that, let us know and we’ll discuss options — sometimes we can temporarily remove a fence panel to gain access, which we’re happy to assist with.
For stump grinding specifically, utility line marking (calling 811) is generally recommended if the stump is anywhere near where underground utilities might run — near the street, close to the house, or in a utility easement. We always recommend calling 811 at least 3 business days before any grinding that goes more than a few inches deep. It’s a free service and takes about 2 minutes. We can walk you through this during your estimate if you’re unsure.
